Founded in 1728, San Ignacio had a plentiful supply of
water and was able to produce enough food to assist many
other mission populations in the central peninsula. By
1755 the Jesuits had completed the church up to the "spring
line," which is the point where the arched ceiling begins. The
Dominicans finished the ceiling and towers in 1789.
My efforts to photograph San Ignacio have always
been frusterated by vehicles in the foreground. On the occasion
of this photograph, just as I positioned my tripod a big red
truck pulled up in front of the wall. I ran over to ask
the driver to move and invited him to come look at the image
on the ground glass. Coming out from under the dark
cloth he said. "It looks OK, but, could you take another one for me with my truck in the
picture?" |
