The mission was established by the Jesuits in 1752.
The stone church was completed by the Dominicans in 1796.
A spring, or ojo de agua, up the arroyo from the
mission irrigates a garden and vineyard. The garden is tended
by Feliz Aravallo Lomeli who makes an honest red wine
from vines that were planted by Jesuit padres. On my first
trip, I purchased an ample supply. Later, saying
our good-bys, my hosts and I drank it up. |
